Why is an Apple iPhone 3G s special? The Apple iPhone 3G is what is referred to as a touchscreen smartphone. You can surf the web, make phone calls, and even instant text message to your hearts content all by touching the screen of the phone. WOW! Sounds like there’s nothing else like it? Well, there is.

There are a number of other touchscreen smartphones that have features comparable to the Apple iPhone 3G. And unlike the inflexible iPhone 3G that can only be purchased in the AT&T Wireless Store, the other touchscreen smartphones out can be bought online or at the store front.

Now the inevitable question comes, what carriers work with these other touchscreen smartphones? The LG Vu, like the iPhone works with AT&T Wireless, the LG Voyager with Verizon Wireless, The HTC Touch with Sprint PCS and Alltel, the Samsung Glyde with Verizon Wireless and the LG dare with Verizon Wireless. So as you can see there is a wide variety of carriers getting on board with the touchscreen smart phone craze.

It seems that maybe everyone wants the Apple iPhone 3G because it is a status symbol. Look at me, I have the new iPhone 3G! This just makes no sense. You can get an equally innovative touchscreen smartphone for a fraction of the cost (or even FREE), and you can get it online if that is your desire. So really, you may be saying, hey look at me, I spent a fortune on a touchscreen smartphone when I didn’t have too.

You should buy for common sense, not because you have to have the hot new phone. Remember, today’s hot new phone is next year’s dinosaur. Now this is not to say that the iPhone 3G is a bad touchscreen smartphone and that you shouldn’t purchase one. Understanding the Differences Between Windows Mobile Pocket PC’s and Windows Mobile Smartphones

I’ve often been asked from my customers why they should choose a Pocket PC over a Smartphone or vice versa. Many users don’t realize that each type of device offers unique User interface setups and thus function differently. In this article I’m going to give a quick breakdown of Pocket PC’s vs Smartphone devices. Mainly just a quick look at a few important differences.

Touch Screen Vs One Handed Navigation

Pocket PC’s are touch screen based units, meaning users can either use a stylus or their fingers to navigate throughout their device. This is an important aspect to consider, if your screen size is small the pocket pc device may become bothersome to use as you may have to navigate through hard to press icons to reach your overall destination. On the other hand a Pocket PC is great if the buttons are easy to push, the iPhone 3G or the HTC TyTN II are both great examples of easy to navigate Pocket PC models. Keep in mind you’ll more than likely be relegated to using both hands at the same time.

On the other hand Smartphones are non-touch screen devices that place their focus on one handed navigation, this is often preferred by users who quickly want to pull up menu’s without having to press around on their screens. Smartphone devices such as the new Windows Mobile 6.0 smartphones have home screens that are set up for one handed navigation, you can simply scroll between easy to access menus and in most cases press on a button to access your applications.

Speaking of applications, this is another important area to examine. For instance, Pocket PC third party applications for a Pocket PC will be different in design than a Smartphone Application, the reason being the lack of a touch screen on the Smartphone. Its not to say one is better than the other, just that the smartphone application will require more modular navigating over the Touch screen based program. In most cases one app will not work on both devices, if you are switching over to a Smartphone or Pocket PC you may want to make sure your favorite applications will still be accessible or at least offer a version for your new device.

Finally, Smartphones also tend to lean towards T9 text input, since most, but not all smartphones do not feature a full keyboard, of course the Blackjack series and some HTC devices break from this convention.

Personally I like the flow of Smartphones, I can navigate easily, although it did take some time to get use to. Whatever decision you make i’d definitely suggest looking at the device online or if possible in person to make sure the device is comfortable for you.

The CECT 599 has all of the features you probably love about the iPhone. You can surf the web, take and play video, play MP3s, and take photos. (It has a really nice camera phone). It also has Bluetooth, a 3.2 inch, high resolution screen and of course, the touch screen everyone is looking for.

The 599 is pretty cheap at between $100 and $130, a steal considering it’s built in, highly innovative features.

Smartphone are phones with advanced technology that goes well beyond basic phones capabilities. Smartphones or becoming closer with every new model to having the power of a home desktop computer that fits in your pocket. These phones have many different applications either built into the phone or you can download over the web. The Apple iPhone comes preloaded with various applications. Through Apple’s iTunes store you can download thousands of application built for productivity or just for entertainment.

Before smartphones there where only basic phones that let you make calls and had very basic applications. The Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) was essentially a smart phone without the capability of making phone calls. Over time and the progress of technology PDA’s added cell phone capabilities which emerged the smart phone.

Operating systems are an essential feature on smartphones. The most popular among operation systems is Symbian OS, built by Symbian Foundation. Symbian contains a user friendly interface, and a framework that utilizes common applications. Symbian OS can be found on Nokia’s product line of smartphones.

Another vastly popular operating system is Research in Motion (RIM). Rim is Symbian Foundation’s biggest competition and ran exclusively on the Blackberry smartphone.

You can’t leave the topic of smartphone operating systems without mentioning Apple’s iPhone OS. Currently 2 billion applications have been downloaded from the iTunes store onto the iPhone. The iPhone uses accelerometers which enable you to tilt the phone sideways to alter the screen presentation. Accelerometers are becoming more popular in smartphones.

The touch screen is a feature made popular by the iPhone which set a burst of a large line of competing touch screen phones. By finger gestures such as sliding, tapping, and pinching the screen, different features are cued.

Access to the web is available through smartphones too. Through the popular 3G network users can access the internet through higher speeds. Through technological advances we will be seeing a 4G network soon. The 4G network would provide consumers with much higher data transfer speed compared to the 3G.

Many phones such as the Apple iPhone utilize user’s home internet through Wi-Fi support. With the addition of a router in your home you can tap into the internet at faster speeds than the 3G network.

Smartphones also include a QWERTY keyboard. QWERTY keyboards are basically a mini version of a PC keyboard. Some phones use physical keyboards and others touch screen keyboards. Before the QWERTY keyboard users would have to continually push the same button in order to rotate through letters. For example, by pressing 1 multiple times you could access the, a, b, and c letter. The QWERTY keyboard was a necessary implementation for the boom of SMS texting.

Email access is another important feature of smartphones. Smartphones are able to sync your email account with your personal email. Smartphones are able to support multiple email accounts. Instant Messaging (IM) services, such as Yahoo! Messenger, and AOL’s AIM are also utilized on the majority of smartphones.

Apple’s iPhone enables you to view attachments sent via email, such as word documents. Through application downloads you can download these documents from your email and edit the text. Copy and paste is a new feature Apple as updated on the iPhone that enables the user to cut or copy text and paste the text into other applications.

The desire for producers is to make the device between the sender and receiver as invisible as possible. The goal is to be able to communicate with each other as effortless as possible. With the technology industry expanding every year, this target becomes more of a realization.
