An 8-Step Process to Solve the Great Smartphone Debate – iPhone Versus EVO

The two factions of supporters are as polarizing as politics. Most Mac users and iPhone lovers are drooling over Steve Jobs’ keynote presentation yesterday at Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) 2010. Android loyalists shrug their shoulders and point out a laundry list of reasons why the iPhone is not a threat to the fast-growing Droid(TM) market.

Personally, this debate hits me at the core. I am a self-proclaimed Apple slappy yet I purchased the HTC EVO last Friday on opening day. Thus far I love the EVO (and will love it more as soon as the Android 2.2 OS – also called Froyo – becomes available). However, I have to admit that in reviewing the WWDC rollout I began to question whether I should take advantage of Sprint’s 30-day satisfaction guarantee.

Honestly, I’m still not 100% sure on which route I’m going to go. On one hand, I love the synergies with my other Mac products including the idea of a centralized iBook that is accessible from my laptop, iPad, or iPhone. Yet on the other side I welcome the ability to view Flash videos online and take advantage of the seamless integration with Google & Gmail.

Like politics, the only real way to make an educated decision is to put aside personal preferences, become aware of one-sided reviews, and leverage an easy yet objective trade-off system to guide my decision-making.

Here’s a simple, 8-step process that you can utilize to solve the iPhone versus EVO debate for yourself (and consider applying a similar process when the next presidential election rolls around, too):

  • STEP 1: Put aside personal pride, preferences or vendettas that you may have associated with either smartphone
  • STEP 2: Educate yourself on the features and functions of each smartphone
  • STEP 3: Conduct a cost analysis being careful to look at lifetime costs that include the cost of the smartphone, the cost of monthly service, replacement costs, etc
  • STEP 4: Assess your current situation and identify the most important goals & objectives that you have for a smartphone
  • STEP 5: Align your goals & objectives with the features and functions of each smartphone (for instance, if on phone video editing isn’t something that helps you reach your goals, then the iPhone’s new iMovie editing feature should not carry much weight. It’s a great feature but is it valuable to you?)
  • STEP 6: Add up the number of features and functions from each smartphone that align with your goals & objectives (for advanced-users, you can do a weighted trade-off)
  • STEP 7: Remind yourself of STEP 1
  • STEP 8: Make your decision, buy the smartphone, and do not look back

This approach will help bring an objective perspective to your decision-making process. Do not worry about which phone is “better”. Instead, spend your time on identifying the better technology for your particular situation.

Deciding upon a smartphone is no different than a business looking to purchase a software application. The overwhelming majority of time, a business will purchase technology without any regard of their goals, objectives, or processes. They let software dictate their business.

Do not make this same mistake. Do not let smartphone technology dictate the way that you go about your day. Instead, understand your own personal processes, goals, and objectives so that you can select the appropriate smartphone to optimize your efforts.

With so many options on the market, just who is making the best Smartphone? Well, that’s not that easy of a question to answer. There are so many great companies out there, but only a few true leaders. One of the first ones, of course, is the obvious iPhone.

A lot of people love the iPhone. It was truly a groundbreaking idea in many of the concepts it exposed us to. The idea of being able to download Apps allowing us to really modify the device for what we want, was revolutionary; and I don’t think Smartphones will ever be the same because of that. My research has showed that while the iPhone is great, not everyone is so thrilled about it. So, the iPhone’s not for you, then which Smartphone is the best for you?

That brings us to the next big-hitter in the best Smartphone, Blackberry. Blackberry has several Smartphone options to chose from. The most popular is the Storm. The Storm was truly one of the first competitors for the iPhone. It was Blackberry based, so it could do everything that your old Blackberry could do, similar OS as the old Blackberry, but this had a sweet touch-screen, downloadable Apps, and was like the Blackberry on steroids! First generation reviews of the Storm were a little disappointing. Issues that were the most common were things like the screen breaking extremely easily, the phone locking up, and if it got dropped even once, it was done; which unfortunately made the phone appear not all that rugged. Still not a bad phone.

Understanding the Differences Between Windows Mobile Pocket PC’s and Windows Mobile Smartphones

I’ve often been asked from my customers why they should choose a Pocket PC over a Smartphone or vice versa. Many users don’t realize that each type of device offers unique User interface setups and thus function differently. In this article I’m going to give a quick breakdown of Pocket PC’s vs Smartphone devices. Mainly just a quick look at a few important differences.

Touch Screen Vs One Handed Navigation

Pocket PC’s are touch screen based units, meaning users can either use a stylus or their fingers to navigate throughout their device. This is an important aspect to consider, if your screen size is small the pocket pc device may become bothersome to use as you may have to navigate through hard to press icons to reach your overall destination. On the other hand a Pocket PC is great if the buttons are easy to push, the iPhone 3G or the HTC TyTN II are both great examples of easy to navigate Pocket PC models. Keep in mind you’ll more than likely be relegated to using both hands at the same time.

On the other hand Smartphones are non-touch screen devices that place their focus on one handed navigation, this is often preferred by users who quickly want to pull up menu’s without having to press around on their screens. Smartphone devices such as the new Windows Mobile 6.0 smartphones have home screens that are set up for one handed navigation, you can simply scroll between easy to access menus and in most cases press on a button to access your applications.

Speaking of applications, this is another important area to examine. For instance, Pocket PC third party applications for a Pocket PC will be different in design than a Smartphone Application, the reason being the lack of a touch screen on the Smartphone. Its not to say one is better than the other, just that the smartphone application will require more modular navigating over the Touch screen based program. In most cases one app will not work on both devices, if you are switching over to a Smartphone or Pocket PC you may want to make sure your favorite applications will still be accessible or at least offer a version for your new device.

Finally, Smartphones also tend to lean towards T9 text input, since most, but not all smartphones do not feature a full keyboard, of course the Blackjack series and some HTC devices break from this convention.

Personally I like the flow of Smartphones, I can navigate easily, although it did take some time to get use to. Whatever decision you make i’d definitely suggest looking at the device online or if possible in person to make sure the device is comfortable for you.
