The 5 Best Smartphones of 2009

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

With smartphones soaring in popularity over the last few years, it is interesting to take a look back and review the best models of 2009. From the iPhone to the Palm Pre; here’s five of the best:

5. Palm Pre - Dubbed the ‘Blackberry killer’ in some quarters, the Palm Pre brought a fresh new approach to smartphones in 2009. The release of Palm Web OS placed user experience as its number one priority, and made the Palm Pre a genuinely useful and multifunctional smartphone. A bad point of the Palm Pre is the issues with its battery life, according to many users.

4. HTC Touch Pro2 – Placing the HTC Touch Pro2 behind the HTC Hero is a tough decision to make, but I feel it is just. The Touch Pro2 comes with a 3.2MP camera, qwerty keyboard and Windows Mobile OS – three features which are better accommodated for in the HTC Hero (in my opinion). The best thing about the HTC Touch Pro2 though, is the bigger resolution screen.

3. HTC Hero - Although similar to the HTC Touch Pro2, the HTC Hero has one major difference – Android OS. The two HTC phones were released at similar times, but the Hero was packed with a 5MP camera and Google Android, which puts it ahead of its manufacture competitor. The OS is smooth, sleek and contains an abundance of cool features. Other than that though, the HTC Touch Pro2 and the HTC Hero are rather similar.

2. iPhone – The top 2 smartphones in this list are predictable, some might say, but there is no denying that they are the current market leaders. The iPhone is continuing the increase in popularity that it deserves, with Apple really pushing to promote its star product in the pre-Christmas rush. Music, video, Web – the iPhone can do it all. As a ‘phone’, it may not be the best in the world (in terms of calls and texts), but it is certainly perfected one thing; applications.

1. RIM Blackberry - The iPhone may be knocking on the door, but RIM still stands strong and continues to deliver the exceptional Blackberry smartphone. Aimed at the business market preliminarily, the Blackberry delivers everything you need to take work on the go. While the iPhone focuses on providing users with a complete device, the Blackberry does limited things very well. Email and conference calls have been perfected by RIM, so much so that the Blackberry still remains the market leader in smartphone devices.

So there you have it – five smartphones that have progressed and continue to take the world by storm throughout 2009. The iPhone is set to soon become the most popular smartphone according to many reports, but for the time being the Blackberry still rules them all.
